I am married to a Colombian lady and we have lived in the USA for 8 years.  She wants to move to Bogota, I like the weather there, not much for hot weather.

I had an ID as a spouse in Colombia that has expired since being in USA.  When do I have to renew this ID, before I go (through the Colombian embassy or soon after I get there.  Length of stay is not determined but should be more that 1 year.

Hi Rodrigo,

From what I can gather, applying for a spousal visa should be very simple. You can obtain Colombian visas from your Colombian consulate. You can also apply for a Colombia marriage visa online. This looks like it is the easiest route. You simply follow the instructions on the website and upload the necessary documents. It doesn't seem to matter whether you are in Colombia when you apply for the visa. After receiving the online visa approval, if doing this in Colombia, you need to travel to Bogotá to get the visa in your passport. Or if you're in your home country, you can get the visa put in your passport at a Colombian consulate.

The safest bet, of course, would be to contact your Colombian embassy and check with them. If you want more information about visas in Colombia, you can have a look at our guide page.

Hope this helps. Rianca
