Hi-

My husband may be pursuing a post at a university in Ghana and I'm wondering how safe it is to bring kids to Accra. Both of our children are toddlers - ages 2.5 and 4, and I'm concerned for both their health and safety. Can anyone comment on the child-friendly nature of the city and the extent of the expat community?

Hi - I've been an expat in Ghana since 1997, originally from Canada. My son was 4 years old when we first arrived.

Ghana is a very safe country in general and there is no real danger in bringing children here. There are a number of accredited and highly recommended internatioanl standard schools, ranging from pre-schools to secondary schools.

Due to the relative political stability in the country, there are many embassies and multi-national companies, which means there are expats from all over the world, and a huge expat community. Many women's groups are formed to welcome new arrivals - examples are the Ghana International Women's Association and the North American Women's Association. These groups sponsor events and provide a plance for new arrivals, especially mothers, to network.

The only issue in Ghana is healthcare. There are a few private clinics in the main cities that are well equipped and professionally run, but the majority of healthcare in the country is poor. Malaria is a real threat in Ghana, but there is effective medication that is safe even for children, and if diagnosed early, it is simply a matter of taking the course of pills, to recover from.

As long as you register with an International health insurance company, or ensure that the company that brings you to Ghana offers this, you can be assured that medical evacuation is always accessible if needed in an emergency.

Overall, Ghana is a great place to raise children, and you should not be afraid to give your kids such a rich experience!
