I've heard Barcelona has some great city beaches, and recommendations from expats in the area?

The city beaches in Barcelona are convenient, and the nearby cafes and wharf certainly add their charm, but for a real day at a beautiful and clean beach I would recommend going to Costa Brava. Tossa de Mar has an old town right on the beach, and if you prefer something more family style take a trip to Tamariu. This area has a small bay with calm water that's perfect for the kids.
