I will start my job in Shanghai this summer and my wife wants to learn Chinese while we are there. This is will be our first time living abroad and we are looking for recommendations for a good and reliable Chinese language school in Shanghai. She wants to study full-time and learn Mandarin as quickly as possible before looking for a job herself in China.

My wife studied Chinese with LTL http://www.livethelanguage.cn/learn-chinese-in-shanghai/ in Shanghai and was very satisfied with her teacher. She spent half a year with them and then got a job offer so she stopped her course. Looking back she says it would have been better to continue the course until she got fluent, which would have probably taken another 5 months as once you start work it is very difficult to make any significant progress with your Mandarin.

Hi Antler,

What kind of work  does your wife want to do in China? If she has certain skills it may not be necessary for her to be fluent in Mandarin (although some knowledge of the local language is always a bonus)

To find out more about the job market read the Working in Shanghai page.

Thanks,

Shantalie
