Hi-

I'm a newcomer to Canada who has been in the country for less than a year. I haven't started working yet, so I don't have any income to report that is earned in Canada, but I'm wondering if I still have to legally file a tax return? What happens if I don't?

Even in you earned no income in Canada over the course of the past year you may still want to file a tax return in order to receive certain payments or credits. I don't know enough enough about you to advise what you'd be eligible for, but it's possible you could file to receive

  • the GST/HST credit (goods and services tax/harmonized sales tax);
  • Canada Child Tax Benefit payments; and
  • provincial or territorial tax credits.
