IB Schools in Cape Town

I'll be moving with my husband and two kids from the UAE (though we're American) for at least 3 to 5 years come this July. Can anyone recommend a reputable international school with an IB curriculum and an suburb close by that's safe and convenient. We don't mind living in an apartment if the city centre is a viable option. Thanks.

Hi Stephanie

The International School of Hout Bay is an IB World School. Hout Bay is a tiny sea-side town which these days basically functions as a suburb of Cape Town. It's a nice area but about a 30-minute drive to the city centre, which might be a bit inconvenient. The school also has branches in Tygerberg and Helderberg, although these are also a bit of a drive from the city centre.

Are you set on the IB curriculum? There are some excellent private schools in Cape Town, in very good, upmarket areas, that follow the British curriculum and the South African curriculum. The International School of Cape Town is based in Wynberg. You could also look into Ceder House in Kenilworth or the Constantia Waldorf School in Constantia, which is an up-market suburb. Another good bet is the American International School of Cape Town, also based in Constantia.

If you're coming from the UAE, you'll be amazed by how much cheaper accommodation and school fees are in comparison. Take a look at our Cost of Living in South Africa and Moving to Cape Town pages for more information - but remember these prices are for upmarket apartments and houses, and if you're on a budget you can find something for less. Depending on your budget, you should be able to find a decent family home near the school of your choice.
