Importing a motor vehicle to Kenya

Hi - I'm soon to leave the UK for Nairobi to take up a project post with an aid agency. I'd thought of shipping out a fairly new Jeep Compass (2.2 litre diesel) that I own, on the basis that I could stick it into a container together with some personal effects. Questions:- 1. Are Jeeps reasonably well serviced in Nairobi? Spares availability? 2. I understand that I can import this (and my personal effects) free of duty. If I sell the vehicle after three years, is there duty to pay? Any other advice on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi,

Jeeps are very well serviced in Nairobi. The local dealership is DT Dobie Ltd. Nothing to worry about there.

I do not know which particular agency you work for, but most non profit and humanitarian international NGOs employees do not pay tax/duty on cars & personal effects imported.

When selling your car afterwards, you can sell it inclusive or exclusive of duty. Depends with the buyer then. Best option would be to sell the car to another expatriate.

If you have any further questions, let me know.

Eugene
