We're planning on staying in Ireland and England for about six months. Would it make sense to have a bank account that had local branches? We were thinking about getting an account with HSBC so it's a US account with worldwide branches. I see that there's plenty of HSBC branches in the UK but not so much Ireland. Suggestions?

There are no HSBC branches in Ireland that I know of. Getting a local bank account for a short time in Ireland is not easy as they require certain documents to prove that this will not be a "money laundering" account, if you understand what I mean. Things like proof of address, are you going to be depositing regular salary monies into the account, etc. Just to say that Bank of Ireland, AIB, and Permanent TSB are probably the biggest local banks in Ireland if you are looking into local banks. I suppose it's asking the questions of how you are going to pay bills, rent, etc. and if you can do all of that through a worldwide HSBC account/credit card/access cash then you probably would not need a local account. Good luck.
