I'm considering a job in Lagos. The salary is really good and the experience I'd be getting would be fantastic, but I'm worried about the safety situation in Nigeria, especially as it would mean I'd be moving to Lagos with my wife and small children. Is it safe to live and work in Nigeria? What's life like in Lagos?

Hi Smith, despite all the negative press that Nigeria gets with regards to safety, many expats move there every year and report feeling quite safe. Within Lagos, most expats live in insular communities within apartment complexes or compounds where there is 24-hour security, which may include high electric fences, security guards and access controlled entrance and exit. Most companies take the safety of their expat staff very seriously and will ensure that every detail is taken care of to ensure the safety of employees and their families, including secure accommodation and transport - many executives have a personal driver at their disposal, which is something you should definitely consider, especially for your wife and children to get around the city - it is not recommended that she drive around herself. Many international schools and companies have buses that arrange secure transport for their students.

As with any large city in the world, you just need to be aware of your surroundings, learn which areas should be avoided and minimise your travel after dark. A move to Lagos can be a rich and rewarding cultural experience, but still, a move that you should consider carefully.

I suggest you have a read of our Safety in Nigeria page, and for further general info about living in Lagos, have a read of our Lagos expat guide
