I was offered a job as a section sales manager. I'm not sure of the location but it's most probably in Muscat.

However, the salary they are offering seems to be pretty low. It's something like Annual Basic 3360; Incentive 1600; Other Allowance 300; Additional Benefits include: Allowance for Car 2100; Fully Furnished Accomodation 900 Leave ticket to Closest international airport 110; Fulll medical and insurance coverage 100. The total comes to 8470 OMR a year.

Is this a good opportunity?

Hi Chaitanya

To put this offer in perspective, 8470 OMR translates to an annual income of 1,356,555.20 INR or around 22,000 USD.

Prices in Oman are generally a lot higher, but you can buy a lot more with your Rial than you could with the currency in somewhere like India. The local purchasing power in Oman is a little less than it is in the United States although prices are also higher in the US.

Whether this would be enough money to get by would largely depend on the size of your family and the kind of lifestyle you're accustomed to. Only you can answer that but, in the meantime, I'd recommend having a look at our Cost of Living in Oman section to give yourself a bit of an idea.

I would look into the employer very carefully. In order to find work in Oman, they have to sponsor you, which is a big investment on their part. To protect Omani businesses, the government has made it very difficult to change jobs once you're in the country. Most times, if you want to resign, you'll have to leave the country for six months and start the visa application process all over again.

For more details on this, have a look at our Working in Oman page.

Hope this helps you in making an informed decision.

Best,

Xavier
