I would love to get some first-hand feedback on living in singapore with children
- what is the cost of living like
- what is the weather in Singapore like
- what are the schools like
- how about domestic help/ nannies
- safety/ the health system
- making friends; how do you meet people
thanks in advance.... T.

Hi Tom-

Singapore is actually one of the world's well-known ideal expat destinations! According to the most recent HSBC Expat Explorer Survey, it ranked highly both in terms of quality of life and career progression smiley.  The city-state is incredibly safe, which is music to any parents ears, and the infrastructure (public transport, healthcare, etc.) is top-notch. Regarding education, there's countless international schools, but these are expensive, so make sure you either negotiate an allowance as part of your contract, or that your salary is high enough to cover costs. And on that note, you should realise that though expat salaries tend to be high, the cost of living in Singapore is creeping up - so try your best to make a budget beforehand (for help with this have a look at the Expat Arrivals Cost of Living in Singapore page).

When it comes to the weather, your London pallor may be in for a bit of a shock. Average temps in Singapore are between 25 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius, with humidity that hovers above the 90 percentile range. So bring your sunscreen and your best white linen suits. Otherwise, good luck with your relocation to Singapore!

Hi Tom

I moved here in July from South Africa with my wife and our two dogs. Singapore is a great city to live in. Very safe, super efficient and loads to do on weekends. It is also very "central" in Asia and you can travel to many destinations from here very cost effective. The weather is hot and humid and does take some getting used and it does rain often depending what time of the year.

We do not have children so I can not assist in that area. Singapore is expensive especially housing, cars, alcohol, cigarettes and red meat. Seafood on the other hand is very affordable. The transport infrastructure is excellent.

Most people have nannies and it depends if you are going to have someone fulltime or part time. Not expensive if I compare it with back home. Singapore is world renowned for it's top notch health care system and I can vouch for it with my personal dealing since being here.

From a food perspective Singapore is heaven with endless choices. From Hawker Centers and Food Courts which is very cheap and delicious to some of the best restaurants in the world.

Making friends is a challenge but here are many Expat forums and communities which you can join.

If you have not read my Blog here is the link. http://eviltwininsingapore.blogspot.com/

I hope the information is helpfull

I would like to ask an expert about moving to Singapore. The above comments and answers I understand, but i need assistance about coming to Singapore on a visit visa and looking for jobs directly or through a consultant. I am an Indian i would like to know how to succeed in my job search. How to proceed... by applying via various websites, or rather by landing in Singapore and searching personally..Also advise about where can i stay economically in a good place. Thank you in advance...

As someone who arrived in Singapore on a Dependent's Pass, I can tell you that finding work was difficult for me. I applied to so many places and only got an email from one place to let me know they received my resume.

If you're able to find work prior to arriving in Singapore, you're lucky. I never tried using a hiring agency, but you might consider using one if looking on your own doesn't work out.

As for staying "economically in a good place," it depends on the location you want to live in. Other things to consider are where you will be working/commuting times, distance to public transportation, distance to schools and parks (if you are moving with children and/or pets).
