I'm moving to Dubai with my boyfriend, and we've heard so many different things about co-habitation, religion and strict cultural rules. How conservative is Dubai? Would love to hear from other expats - will we be able to live in the same flat together? Are there any churches in Dubai? We're Christian and we don't want to hide our religion. Will this be a problem? Can we hold hands in public?

Hi GlobalNomad, while the UAE is a conservative Islamic country, Dubai is somewhat more relaxed when it comes to many aspects of expat life and Western culture. However, co-habitation between married couples is illegal. Although many unmarried expats do move there together and live together - and even get away with it - it's definitely something that should be considered very carefully. If you're not married you won't be able to sponsor your boyfriend and vice versa. Only married couples can sponsor each other when it comes to visas. As for holding hands in public, it's better to avoid any obvious public displays of affection for risk of offending local sensitivities. I suggest you have a read of our Culture Shock in Dubai page and our informative article on Cultural Adjustments in the UAE

There are a few churches in Dubai and expats are allowed to practice their religion freely. Attending a church in Dubai is also a great way to meet other like-minded expats, and grow your social circle. See Religion in Dubai for more on this.

All the best with your relocation to Dubai! Hope it all goes well for both you and your boyfriend!
