Hello, Im planning to move to Nicosia this summer with my 7-year old daughter. She will finish 1st grade of elementary school in Croatia and start 2nd grade in Nicosia. Im worried because she doest speek english or greek at this point and its hard to decide where to send her to school. Im planning to get her a language tutor all through summer . Any similar experiences or maybe an advice what to do... Thanks! Maja

Hi Maja

The language barrier is the biggest obstacle to sending expat children to public schools in Cyprus. Much of the standard of a school will depend on the teachers, so try to get recommendations from other expat parents.

What language does your daughter speak?

Read more about the schooling system on the Education and Schools in Cyprus page.

Thank you so much for your reply Shantalie. :) My daughter speaks Croatian and is learning English in school but is far away from being fluent in it. I have talked to the Ministry of education in Nicosia and they told me that kids at that age usually dont have a lot of problems learning greek. According to our new adress she will go to Primary school c in Aglantzia which is a very small school with only 200 students in all 6 grades so Im hoping it will be even easier because of that. My future husband also visited that school and talked to the teachers over there and they were optimistic aswell. One of the teachers is giving private lessons in greek so we arranged for her to come to our house during summer and tutor my daugter before school starts and also continue coming during school year to help with homework. Im really hoping everything will work out:) Maja
