My husband and I have just moved to Bergen this week. We are renting an apartment but have noticed there are no bins. We saw someone put rubbish down a pipe type object yesterday . We have green pipes in the grounds but how do we use them and what can we put in them? Please help

Hi Melanie,

So, this is an interesting one. Bergen started installing an underground waste vacuum system a few years back to prevent fires, improve recycling and to make the city look prettier. The project is expected to be finished by 2020 (If you have it installed already, it probably works, don't worry)

One pipe is for paper and plastic, and the other is for household or residual waste.

As for which one is which, I'll have to do some more digging and ask on our social media channels.

That said, it might be best just to check with your neighbours - it isn't exactly a common phenomenon, so you have nothing to be embarrassed about.

In the meantime, check out our  Norway guide, which starts with Moving to Norway to preempt anything else that may sneak up and surprise you.

Best of luck!

Xavier

Thanks Xavier, that sounds like a very modern approach to waste removal. I will have to check with the neighbours I think. Thanks again and if you do find anything else with your digging please let me know, I appreciate any advice and help. Mel
