Hi David

New Zealand offers free healthcare to citizens and residents on a work permit, but I'm afraid not to most people on a working holiday visa. You will need to get some private medical insurance through an international company like Bupa, UNLESS you are a UK or Irish national, in which case New Zealand has a reciprocal agreement with the UK that would give you some access to emergency medical care.

You can see Healthcare in New Zealand and Visas in New Zealand for more information.
