I am the single mom of three children (2,8,10) on an international assignment in London. I am coping with all the adjustments to a new culture, home, etc. but feel doubly overwhelmed being here by myself with my children, no spouse and all my family/friends back home. Is there anyone out there in a similar situation? Any suggestions on overcoming the anxiety and loneliness? Any suggestions on how to meet people and not feel so isolated?

Hey Barb,

London is a big city and its easy to feel alone and bit isolated when you first arrive. Although, people seem busy and unfriendly once you get to know them in social settings you'll find people you get a long with.

Remember London is full of expats, so there will be loads of people who are new to the city and find themselves in exactly the same situation as yourself.

There are lots of single parent groups in London where people in a similar situation  meet up to share experiences and support one another.

Also, take a look at the Expat Arrival's pages on Lifestyle in London and Kids in London. You'll find lots on tips on things to do with the children, these activities should help keep you busy at the start.

I hope you start to settle in and make friends soon. Good luck !

Hey Barb that sounds tough. Where are you in London? Londoners/English tend to be reserved but if you make the first move you will find they open up. Can you invite over the kids new school friends for a play date with the mums? That's a good way to go. I'm just doing that myself now with my 4 yr old. If you wanted to chat etc let me know. I have a nearly 2 yr old also. Sharon

I am considering an assignment in Swizterland with two kids-- 7 and 9. So huge kudos to you with your three! I am glad to see I would not be the only one doing this. Seems kind of scary. I wish I was going to London.
