Taking a dog to Spain

Hello, one more question -
We are planning a move to Spain and want to know if we can bring our dog, and what is involved. Do I need to get a pet passport? Can I simply take him in the car and drive out there?
Let me know, many thanks...

To take your dog to Spain you'll need to make sure that your animal is identified and that you have the appropriate certificates. Dogs must be identified with a tattoo or a microchip - the latter being the most common option. Most vets use standard microchips and the insertion process is easy and quick .

Owners taking their dog to Spain must also get a certificate from their vet with the following info:

  • the Owner must be named
  • the animal must be accurately described with its origins noted
  • the info about the microchip must be included, including date and location of insertion
  • the info on the rabies vaccine must be included, and must be valid for four months from the point of importation

Once the certificate is signed and stamped by the vet its only valid for 10 days, so make sure to schedule the appointment once your tickets are booked and y our date of travel is confirmed.

Which brings me to another point, if you are indeed planning on bringing your dog to Spain you should check with the airlines beforehand to make sure they have a live passenger department that accepts animals. British Airways to Alicante does, but I'm not too sure about too many others.
