I am 28 years old and I am looking into moving to New Zealand with my boyfriend for at least a year, possibly more. We are flexible and easy-going, and are looking for a new adventure! We particularly like Wellington. I have been working as a social worker in child protection (similar to Children Youth & Families in NZ) for the last four years in the United States. I have my Master's in Social Work degree, and I believe my education would be the equivalent of level 9 in NZ. Social work is on the long term skills shortage list, and I could look into getting the Skilled Migrant Work Visa. Since we are not looking to move to NZ permanently, is it possible to get by with just a temporary work visa and still work in the social work field? The process for the skilled migrant work visa looks quite long and expensive (which I am willing to do if need be), and I am wondering if it's possible (or likely) to get work in my field with other types of visas. I know that the Holiday Work Visa is always an option should we chose to go that route since we are both under 30, but it appears that there are pretty big limits on the type of work you can do. Any assistance or information would be so appreciated!!
