We're going to be living in Istanbul for the next year, and as my kids are at a very critical time in their education I'm worried about the schooling system in Turkey. Are there good international schools in Istanbul? What are the local schools in Turkey like? Any advice appreciated!!!!

Hi Jenny !

While expat children are allowed to attend local schools in Turkey, most expat parents do prefer to send their children to an international school because it allows for a smoother transition as they tend to follow similar curriculums to the ones followed in schools back home.

You didn't say where you were from but there are good British, French and German schools in Istanbul. Remember that places are limited at these international schools so it is recommended that you get the ball rolling when it comes to securing places for your children.

Please take a look at our Expat Arrivals page on Education and Schools in Turkey for a good overview on this issue.

Best of luck with your move to Istanbul.

Hi Jenny, as Shantalie has stated, most expats choose to send their kids to an international school in Turkey, and most of these are of a high standard. For a list of some of the best schools in Istanbul, also check out our Education and Schools in Istanbul page.

Hi Jenny Unfortunately this is one of the biggest concerns for most expats. Well it was for me. I just felt guilty to raise my children away from home so I needed to find a school with a good curriculum. There are certain International Schools in Istanbul that are not affiliated with any curriculum. Most are not even accredited. I found one in Dragos that implements and is approved by the American Common Core Standards California Frameworks. The campus was also nice - it is a small school with real certified teachers, a good curriculum and a real play area. I liked it and signed up my daughter, we will see how it goes. I will keep you updated! www.keystoneschools.com.tr

For Izmir, look into MEF. They are accredited and very good.
