Hi there,

I've got a job offer in Mombasa and I am keen to accept it but first I wanted to get an idea about what the city was like. Is there much to do with regards to nightlife, shopping, etc ? Is there a large expat community ? And how are expats treated by the local community?

Is Mombasa a safe city to live in? Which suburbs are recommended for foreigners like myself?

Please help

Hi GlobalNomad,

Mombasa has a growing expat community, so you don't need to worry about being the only new arrival in town.

While Mombasa is not as cosmopolitan as the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, you will find that there are a growing number of facillities. Furthermore, tourism is an growing source of revenue in Mombasa, so lots of restaurants, bars and clubs are popping up to serve the needs of foreign visitors.

Kenyans are known for being very friendly and hospitable, so make an effort to get to know the locals and your experience in Mombasa will be far richer. Do however try to dress modestly when out and about as the majority of the population in Mombasa are Muslim.

Like with any city in a developing country, you will find that there are areas of Mombasa that should be avoided. Most expats will like in gated communities with security.
