First, let me introduce myself. I am from Bulgaria, Eastern Europe. I am married and very soon we expect our first child. My wife and I are in love with the sea and warm weather and for some time we've thought about relocating for a year and trying a place with good weather all year, nice beaches, normal prices and English-speaking locals.
Could you please let us know what life in Algavre is like for young families with small children? What are the average prices for rentals for a year (not big American style houses, we need just 2 bedrooms and enough space for 2 adults)? What is the weather like (does it get very hot)? Is there good internet (as I need fast and reliable connection for my work)? What are the attractions or activities one can do there? Are there good and affordable kindergartens and schools etc? Please give as much information as you can. This will very much help us decide if it is a good place for us to move as soon as the little guy can travel.
Kind regards, Dilyan
The Expat Arrivals page on Moving to the Algarve has lots of information for expats thinking of relocating to the region.
The Algarve is known for its beautiful beaches and the weather is usually good. In winter months temperatures hover around the low teens, and in the summer temparatures are typically low to mid twenties.
Since the Algarve is such a favoured holiday region, some housing can be quite expensive compared to other places in Portugal. Luckily there are many types of accommodation to choose from in the Algarve and some are much more budget-friendly than others. You can find more information on this on the Accommodation in the Algarve page. The Cost of Living in Portugal page may also be helpful.
You would need to learn at least some Portugese and unfortunately it's a notoriously difficult language to learn. It should also be noted that the school curriculum is taught in Portugese, and some teachers in Portugese schools don't speak English at all.
Public schooling is offered at little or no cost, but international schools or private schools can be very expensive.
The internet infrastructure in Portugal is very good so you should have no problems there.
