Hi everyone,

I am new to Dubai & from the UK. My kids are going to a prominent private school and I have discovered that a number of the FS teachers (yes teachers - not assistants) are not in any way qualified to teach. No degree at all, no teaching qualifications or teaching experience.

I want to know if this is common in schools in Dubai before taking my kids out of this school. Does anyone else know about other schools as if they are all this bad there is no point moving. One teachers was a parent 2 years ago, an assistant last year and a teacher this year with no qualms at all and she isn't the only one - shocking!!

I may as well save the fees & educate them myself. It seems as though they have pulled people off the street & call them teachers. The head of FS assured us all that all their teachers were degree qualified with 3 years minimum experience but I now know this not to be the case. In addition to this, the 'specialist' teacher teaching music and swimming has zero qualifications in swimming or music ... nor a degree of any kind. She is not qualified in any musical instrument or in any theory.

My biggest fear in moving here was my kids education & despite being given assurances it seems as though things are worse than I thought. Anyone got any advice or schools that are serious about their teachers abilities & qualifications? Please help. T

Thanks,

Amie

Hi, thanks for the replies Xavier & Anon'. I didn't know what KHDA was bit have looked it up. I will definitely be ringing them & writing to them. As I scratch the surface even more it seems to get worse. I have now found out (after asking more questions) that the FS1 leader (also a full time FS1 teacher) has only been teaching since Sept this year, no previous experience other than being a class room assistant (at the same school) last year & was just a mum prior to that!. No degree, no teacher training & no experience (former cabin crew).... & this is the person managing the FS1 teaching staff. Disgusted.

Hi Amie

From what I know, some schools may hire unqualified first language English speakers, especially for the lower grades and particularly for teaching English as a second language. These teachers usually, if the school is worth its salt, at least have some kind of degree.

The issue of an unqualified music teacher (who is advertised as being a specifialist) is a bit disconcerting though.

Hopefully some of our other expats in Dubai can help more with this.

In the meantime, if you are considering your options, have a look at our  Education and Schools in Dubai and International Schools in Dubai pages.

This is quite alarming. Better write to KHDA.

That is terrible. Hope it gets sorted out for the kids' sake.

Best of luck,

Hello Amie, Thanks for the insight about the school, may we know which area this school is located or name of the name. I am moving to dubai with my family & will be soon enrolling my kids into a primary school.
