Every country offers a unique experience of their culture and it is their distinct way of life that makes the difference. Unfortunately, not all travelers and tourists have an open mind to welcome and embrace that difference in customs. There are certain traditions which are considered taboo in some culture but totally normal in other societies. This scenario is quite prevalent when you are visiting UAE.
Although Abu Dhabi has adapted already the modernization of the western world, its culture which is rooted in Islamic values still holds a strong influence in their way of life.
Weekend
The first working day of the week here in UAE is Sunday and the weekend is over Friday and Saturday. Most of the government and public offices are closed on Saturday; this varies for the private companies. For example some work half day on Thursday while others are off for two days on weekends or just on Friday only.
Working Hours / Office TimingsThe working hours and office timings here in UAE vary according to the nature of the business establishments. Some private companies are open for straight nine hours with one hour lunch break while others have three or four hours lunch break. Hence, it is common to see offices open until seven or eight in the evening.
For Ladies Only
You’ll see this sign a lot, particularly in public areas where there are specific areas and facilities allocated specifically for women. Some banks or leisure facilities such as fitness centres have branches exclusively for ladies only. In public transportation there is an allocated section for ladies only, and women are prioritized in queues for tickets or boarding the public bus. This gender segregation even extends to parks and recreational venues, where there are specific days of the week for exclusive access only to ladies or families. Remember to enquire ahead if planning an outing!
Hairdressing Salon
It is very rare to find a unisex hairdressing salon here in UAE. Most of the salons are either for men or women only. Generally men are not allowed to even visit the women’s beauty salon.
Christian Church
Most of the Christian churches in the UAE have schools attached to them. The daily Mass is in English however they also hold Masses in different languages to accommodate the diverse expat population.
Alcohol
Most of the restaurants and bars in the hotels served alcoholic beverages. It is also sold in selected shops, however an alcohol license is required. At certain times the government will issue a circular that there will be no alcohol and live entertainment during particular holidays. Such circulars are very detailed. It will specify the exact time when the dry night starts and ends.
Ramadan
This is the holy month for Muslims in which all Emirate citizens fast from sunrise to sunset. Generally restaurants are closed until Suhoor (breaking of the fast). During day time eating and drinking in public areas is not allowed and it is punishable by law.
