Education and Schools in Perth


As in greater Australia, kids can either attend a public, a private or a faith-based private school in Perth. Both permanent and temporary residents with an approved subclass visa (457-visa holders qualify) are entitled to send their children to public schools in Perth tuition-free; though, it will be necessary to pay for uniforms and resource fees (stationary and excursions).
 
Though the states of Victoria and New South Wales claim more top ranking institutions than Western Australia, most expats still claim to be satisfied with the standard of education in Perth. 
 
Children tend to start school early in Perth and greater West Australia, and most (nearly 95 percent) attend pre-primary school and kindergarten (nearly 90 percent). School attendance officially becomes compulsory from Grade 1 and then remains so until students turn 17.
 
The West Australian school system places a pointed emphasis on physical education (two hours are mandatory each week), and also emphasises extra-curricular activities.
 
A good portion of the private schools in the city are Catholic, others are affiliated to other sects of the Christian church and there are a few international schools as well. Private schools tend to charge AUD 20,000 in fees each year.
