Frequently Asked Questions about Perth

Does Perth suffer from water shortages?

Yes, dire water shortages have plagued Perth for the last few years, and in addition to imposing restrictions and advocating for conservation government imposed price hikes on water usage in 2011 to try to curb consumption. There are water sprinkler restrictions in place, and if it wasn’t for the extra supply created by the nearby desalination plant – residents wouldn’t be able to water their gardens at all.

How far is Perth from other Australian cities?

Perth is roughly 2,470 miles (3972 km) from Sydney, and roughly 2150 miles (3456 km) from Melbourne. While fairly removed from other Australian cities, Perth does have the advantage of being somewhat closer to European destinations.

How can I meet people when I arrive?

Australians are big sports and outdoors people. To meet the locals, join a sports team/club and you’ll soon have a circle of people with common interests. For those with children it is a simple matter of meeting other parents through playgroups and kindergartens. Expect to form relationships more easily with other expats than with Perth natives.
