Frequently Asked Questions about Vancouver
How safe is Vancouver?
Vancouver has made a concerted effort to reduce its crime rate. 16% of the city budget is now spent on police and their presence is notable. Housebreaking is a fairly large problem by North American standards, but by world standards Vancouver is an exceptionally safe place to live.
What is there to do in Vancouver?
The nightlife in Vancouver can be a little dull, with a limited selection of dance clubs and bars. However this is a minor downside when compared to the cheap and varied restaurant and shopping options that Vancouver can offer. Expect to pay about US$16 for a dinner out. The bountiful natural surroundings and the accompanying outdoor activities such as hiking, surfing and boating or even just sitting in the park mean that one is never at a loss for something to do.
Do I need a car?
Almost all of Vancouver is covered by the public transport system and the local government has made an immense effort to make life easier for pedestrians. The SkyTrain’s coverage is currently being extended. Soon a larger portion of the city, will have access. The SeaBus across Burrard Inlet makes transit from North and West Vancouver to the city centre fairly painless. Of course the flexibility offered by a car is still desired by many, but expect to pay up to US$16 for a full days parking in the city. Public transport will usually cost between US$3 to US$7, but remember to get exact change before boarding a bus as the driver will not accept notes.
