Healthcare in Waterloo

healthcare in waterloo
Canadian healthcare is first class and medicare in Waterloo, as in the rest of the country, is largely funded by the national health insurance system.

This system, called the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP), extends coverage to all residents of the Ontario Province at a monthly premium (automatically deducted from a person's salary in tax) and covers doctors, specialists and all necessary medical surgery. Co-pays are extremely low or non-existent.

Unfortunately, only expats who have residence permits are eligible to take advantage of the tax-funded health insurance system, so those who don’t will need to rely on private health insurance coverage to fund any medical needs.

Regardless of how payment is made though, the doctors in Ontario are highly educated and medical staff are very competent, so expats can rest assured they will be well taken care of in Canadian hospitals.
