Switzerland: Do I Need to Know any Swiss Languages to Survive in Zurich

Hi-

My boyfriend is considering moving to Zurich for summer holidays, will he be able to get by only speaking English? I know Switzerland has many official languages, does this mean its easier or more difficult to fit into the swing of things. Thanks!

Hi there,

You can get by without knowing German for basic things, but the truth is train announcements, product labels, medicine leaflets and a lot of documents connected to immigration and just day to day administration will be definitely in German and maybe Italian and French, but not English. Most restaurants don\'t have English menus. These are just a few examples of things he might struggle with should he not know German
