What's on in Munich

Fasching (Feb)
Fasching marks the period prior to Lent in Munich and is celebrated with parades, masked balls, street parties and elaborate costumes. The carnival season peaks on Shrove Tuesday when what seems like the entirety of Munich’s populations turns up at Viktualienmarkt in fancy dress costume to eat, drink and dance the night away.
Munich Ballet Week (May)
This week-long festival showcases the talent of the globally recognized Bavarian State Ballet. International guest ensembles journey to Munich to perform alongside the local dancers, and modern dance and classic dance exhibitions are scheduled to wow spectators.
Munich Opera Festival (June)
The Opera Festival is the most important event on the city’s music calendar, held every summer since 1876 in one of the world’s most beautiful opera houses. Enthusiasts from around the world gather to listen to the renowned Bavarian State Opera, with a programme of about 70 different performances. Two free, open-air performances are also held outside the opera house in the square.
Oktoberfest (Sept/Oct)
Oktoberfest in Munich is a two week celebration that turns the city from cosmopolitan centre to jiving beer hall. Bavarian breweries set up massive makeshift beer gardens on the Theresienwiese, a meadow the size of 20 football fields, and prepare themselves to commandeer the revelry that tourists and locals have come to expect. Bands, fun parks and Bavarian specialties surround. Great fun!
