Weekend Breaks in Bangalore

Bangalore is a city that combines the promise of what India will become with all the challenges of the country’s present-day creaking infrastructure and too-fast expansion. Needless to say, it’s great for work and has lots of city nightlife to keep you buzzing, but sometimes there’s nothing more needed than a weekend break from Bangalore

As the metropolis is landlocked in India’s southern region, you may feel your well-deserved escape will necessitate a flight; however, travel to the airport and delays will often inevitably take you as long, or longer, as a comfortable drive to Chikmagalur or Wayanad, two prime places to unwind.

Alternatively, if you are antsy for the sea shore, Pondicherry offers a nice diversion for analytical expat minds (and tax-free alcohol).

Regardless of where you end up though, it's important that when planning your weekend drive-away from Bangalore, you make sure to hire a driver who knows the roads, or you commission the regular driver you’re familiar with. Be sure to hire a comfortable car, pack plenty of bottled water and negotiate the cost of your driver’s needs (accommodation and meals) beforehand.

Recommended weekend breaks from Bangalore

Mysore Palace - a weekend break from BangaloreMysore

The closest city for a weekend trip out of Bangalore is Mysore, which is about 100 miles (150km) away and holds a reputation for being the second-cleanest city in India.

Expats will definitely want to consider a weekend break in September and October during the Dasara festival, when the magnificent palace is completely enshrouded in over 96,000 fairy lights.

Also, the local flower market is beautiful and smells divine, and you can visit factories producing Mysore silks, but don’t give in to the temptation to buy, as there is a wider range of Mysore silk available in Bangalore. After all, you are an expat, not a tourist.

On your meander home, stop at the famous Temple at Somnathpur. You’ll need to take a detour down a rutted track masquerading as a main road, but the drive to this Hoslar temple will give you a glimpse of rural India.

Another possible stop just outside of Bangalore is the Big Banyan Tree. This 400-year-old, single plant covers over three acres of land. If not for the tree, stop for the cheeky monkeys who will entertain you for whatever bits of food you can offer.

About 140 miles (225km) outside of Bangalore, the Bandipur National Park is a tiger and elephant reserve charactersied by protected sandlewood trees. At just over five hours from Bangalore it's a bit far for a weekend trip in its own right, but is worth a day trip from Mysore, only 55 miles (89km) away. Remember to book a safari ahead of time, as private vehicles aren't allowed in the park.

Chikmagalur - a weekend escape from BangaloreChikmagalur

Known for its coffee, Chikmagalur is a hill station less than 160 miles (250 km) from Bangalore.  The lovely scenery and low temperatures that come with a visit to this part of the Mullayanagiri Range provide instant relaxation.

Popular as a summer destination, expats may find it an ideal escape at any time of the year.
Choose between jungle hikes to incredible waterfalls or visits to the temples at Halebid and Belur. If you truly wish to unwind and give your mind a break, stay at the Serai, and take in the serenity and luxury that can only be found in India. Alternate a day at the spa with a safari arranged by the resort.

Break your trip halfway with a visit to the Jain Colossus at Shavanabelgola to see one of the most impressive sculptures of the ancient world. Whether you just want a quick leg stretch or to stand in a queue with throngs of pilgrims, this stopover will not disappoint.

Wayanad - a Weekend getaway from BangaloreWayanad

The nature of Wayanad, just 165 miles (265km) to the southwest of the city,  will really take you out of the hustle and bustle of Bangalore. Rural life, centered on agriculture and framed by mountains and rivers, provides a real retreat.

The Wynad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to tigers, bears, snakes, lizards, and of course, monkeys.  Expats can spend time spotting elephants in the distance, or can ride one while exploring the jungle. Treat yourself to up-close views of these animals by hiring a guide. You will also see amazing birds and plants. However you choose to explore the area, you will catch a glimpse of the India Rudyard Kipling saw before writing The Jungle Book.

There are many hotels and resorts in the area, and you can choose between relaxing your mind or your pocketbook.

Pondicherry - a weekend break from BangalorePondicherry

If you are yearning for a visit to the sea, then give Pondicherry a go. The city was a former French enclave, and there are still many French passport holders living here today. After a long night’s drive, you can arrive in time to watch the sun rise over the ocean. You can join in with the locals taking an early morning stroll, or can rather just watch as they do morning exercises along the coastline.

As a Union State, there is little to no sin tax, making this a popular destination for shopping and nightlife. However, a permit is required to enter Pondicherry. Try to get this in Bangalore before leaving, especially if you will be arriving early or late as it may mean you need to wait around or turn around.

Beaches, shopping and nightlife are the key entertainment, and Pondicherry is popular with the expats as it summons the kind of nostalgia reminiscent of summer weekends by the sea while you were growing up.

A Bangalore Staycation

As tempting as it can be to take in the sights, sounds and smells of the places just outside of Bangalore, it’s not always possible. Not to mention, sometimes a staycation can be just as restful, if not much less expensive.

So, why not consider one of the luxury Ayurvedic lifestyle spas in or around Bangalore. Try Shreyas for a yogic lifestyle weekend, or get pampered at Soukya, awarded the title as India’s Best Wellness Centre (both are only an hour’s drive away). Enjoy top vegetarian cuisine and private yoga sessions at either resort.

At Shreyas you can stay in a tented cabin (which still has air conditioning) or one of their garden cottages, and you’ll have access to everything from an infinity pool and spa treatments to broadband internet.

Soukya has over 30 acres of lush gardens. In addition to yoga and spa treatments, Soukya provides holistic medical treatments and has welcomed people such as the Duchess of Cornwall and Archbishop Tutu through its gates. Enroll in a wellness programme and develop the tools necessary to cope with the stresses back in the city.
