Markets in Dublin

Dublin is one of the oldest cities in Europe, with areas dating back as far as 988 AD. It was founded as a Viking trading outpost and signs of that mercantile past can still be seen today. You’ll find open-air markets taking place almost every day of the week.

Expats need never miss their home food for too long as artisan stalls usually cater to every national food-group you can think of. And in spite of the glam shopping streets everywhere, Dubliners still find time to browse in clothing markets too.

Temple Bar MarketCow’s Lane Market
Described as a fashionista’s paradise, this Saturday market is a showcase for Dublin’s young designers. Students from the National College of Art and Design turn up with clothes, boots, jewellery and ceramics. Remember the name of the stallholder you buy from, as she could be the next Stella McCartney!

Dalkey Tram Yard Market
This is a lovely beachside market, although some stalls are covered over so it’s possible to shop in winter without freezing. And yes, it's a great place to fill up your kitchen with fresh fruit and veg. Artichokes, chillies, chard and berries of all sorts can be found there depending on the season. All locally grown too, so you can offset some carbon guilt at the same time!

Dublin Flea Market
This monthly market is the place to find anything you can’t find at the other markets! Come armed with your haggling skills and a tough skin or sign up to empty your apartment before you move on. It takes place in Newmarket, Dublin 8 so you could fit in a walk around historic Smithfield while you’re there.

Harcourt Street Market
The Green Luas line runs along this street from the city to the suburbs of Ranelgh and Rathmines, which makes it very accessible. This one is a Thursday outing with stalls selling jewellery and clothing as well as foodstuffs. The only real link between the products is that everything is organic or handmade.

Howth Farmer’s Market
Combining a day by the sea with great food is the perfect way to get out of town without making too much effort. This eclectic market takes place on Sundays and serves up a mix of Lebanese deserts, crunchy calamari and all the fresh veg you could eat. French expats will also find the best crepes in town. Just remember to bring a jacket if you go in the winter, as the open-air market is right on the seafront. You’ll also find small shops selling freshly caught fish just a few minutes' walk away on the pier.

Temple Bar Food Market
This takes place every Saturday in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar. You can find everything from fresh bread to locally made cheese to authentic Mexican food. This last item is hard to find even in the city’s many restaurants and sells fast! The market fills up with locals and tourists alike so be sure to get there early. A book market takes place nearby on Saturday and Sunday afternoons with a mixture of second-hand and new books on offer.
