Your best bet will probably be to use the “takkyubin” service provided by the Yamato Transport Company. This is a private courier service which will deliver boxes to your door and often works out much cheaper and more effective than ordinary shipping or postage. They have offices at various locations in major cities across the globe.
 

Bringing a pet along could complicate your move: you will have to get documentation for your pet (as well as notifying the Ministry of Agriculture at least 40 days prior to your arrival of the kind and number of pets you will be importing) and the pet will have to stay in quarantine at the airport for at least two weeks. During this time you will be responsible for feeding and generally looking after your pet: an important point to bear in mind when choosing your hotel!

Also remember that it will make your accommodation search more complicated and increase the deposit you will be asked to pay. Research the requirements for your pet (it depends on what kind of animal it is) and for your country of origin well in advance, as different rules apply.
