What's on in Tokyo

Tokyo has many events and festivals, although these are some of the best known:

Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival
At the start of spring, cherry trees erupt into pink and white blossoms lending the city a magical aura. The event is celebrated with hanami parties that take the form of picnics, drinking, singing and dancing. Street stalls appear and musicians in costume serenade the picnickers. Ueno Park is one of the best places in Tokyo to experience this.

Sanja Festival
The Sanja Matsuri is Tokyo's biggest festivals, forming a trinity of traditional festivities with the Kanda Festival and Sanno Festival, which alternate every year. Devotees form processions carrying portable shrines to the accompaniment of ancient ritual music.

Chichibu Yomatsuri
The small town of Chichibu gets lit up by a thousand fireworks over this weekend in December. Colourful floats and parties support this lively occasion. Many residents from Tokyo make the short trip to Chichibu, the journey itself a fun experience.
