Background

With a history that goes back to 1950, St Peter's Boys School is an Anglican primary school accepting students from Grade 0 to 7. An Independent Quality Assurance Agency (IQAA) report in 2012 praised the school for the happiness of its students, its secure environment, academic and extra-mural standards, and its effective management.

St Peter's offers a range of sporting options from football and swimming to rock climbing. Its cultural activities include drama, voice training and jazz bands, while senior students have their music exams assessed by the Royal School of Music (London). Students are also exposed to using technology, such as iPads, constructively from the beginning of their school career.

Additionally, St. Peter's offers an Academic Support Unit which exposes students and teachers to specialists in fields such as speech therapy and neurodevelopment. It even has an apiary, which controls the bee population and supplies the school shop with fresh honey.

What the school says

"St Peter's is an Anglican school, focused on academic achievement within an environment that balances high academic standards with sport, music, culture and the development of each child as an individual. A clearly defined value system of respect for each individual, courtesy, and honest and open communication, underpin the ethos."

What the inspectors say

"The school's ethos of informality balanced against professionalism is highly regarded. The emphasis on courtesy and respect for others, the freedom to make mistakes, the importance of good values, and the imposition of consequences for discipline breaches and the no-tolerance approach to bullying are all aspects of this."

– IQAA report 2012

Location

St Peter's School is located in Paulshof, an affluent suburb in the north of Johannesburg, situated between Lonehill and Sunninghill. It is approximately a 20-minute drive north of Sandton City.

From the students

"St Peter's is not a good school, it is a great school. The teachers are friendly, we have cool grounds, and we are encouraged to do our best at sport and in the classroom. I also like hot lunch!"
