Travel in Cape Town

Cape Town’s image as an international city falls apart when it comes to public transport. There are no subways or efficient buses, and taxis are expensive.

The most ubiquitous form of public transport is the minibus taxi, which although cheap and efficient, is not recommended as a safe transport option. Drivers are reckless, conditions cramped and vehicles often in poor condition. The other main forms of public transport are the trains and yellow Putco buses which ferry passengers in to the city from the outlying areas of the city.

Expats will need to buy and use their own transport, preferably a car, although a scooter is ideal for the city centre.

The best taxi service within the city is probably Rikkis (www.rikkis.co.za) which offers a 24 hour service including a post-drinking pickup service for the intoxicated driver.

If travelling to the airport it is recommended to use a shuttle service. The reasonable priced www.capetownshuttleservice.co.za is a good bet; so is www.way2gotransfers.co.za
