Expats will enjoy an extremely low cost of living in Johannesburg. In 2010 the city was ranked 211 overall out of 276 international expat locations making it one of the cheapest expat destinations in the world.

Even when compared with South Africa’s other major cities, on average, expats in Johannesburg enjoy a higher economic standard of living. Markets grow faster here, and as a whole the inhabitants are wealthier which translates into very positive purchasing power.

Be warned, though, that higher salaries do tend to translate into a more fervent consumerism, and Johannesburg’s many malls aren’t exactly deterring factors for the shop-a-holic.
