Moving to Seoul

As the political, cultural, financial and educational hub of the country, it’s easy to see why Seoul is the most popular choice for expats moving to South Korea. As a buzzing metropolis situated on the Han River, the city combines a modern, fast-paced, high-tech lifestyle with a rich historical background evident in a scattering of palaces, fortress walls, royal shrines and hanok (one-storey wooden houses with tiled roofs).

While the cost of living in Seoul is not the cheapest of expat destinations, the added expense means that the centre provides all the conveniences of modern city life.

The public transportation network is vast and efficient and taxis are numerous and cheap. There are huge shopping malls throughout the city and there is a large selection of both local and international restaurants. With a wide range of accommodation options, international schools and quality healthcare it is easy to see why so many expats choose to make Seoul their home.

Though Seoul’s big city reputation can be intimidating to some - it is the country’s major business hub and produces a fifth of South Korea’s total Gross Domestic Product (GDP) - Seoul is also a place that has a cultural charm that can be endearing to even those uncomfortable in a cosmopolitan environment. Parks and rivers abound, teahouses can be found nestled between skyscrapers, and cultural festivals are the norm.
