Healthcare is generally of good quality in Bangkok, and many doctors and specialists speak English.

Private hospitals are especially first-rate and often employ staff members that have received education and accreditation from the West. These institutions are also much less expensive than what expats may be used to coming from Europe or the United States.

Despite the reasonable cost of treatment, expats should make sure they have medical insurance in the case of emergencies and when major medical treatment is required.

The quality of care and the corresponding low price for treatment has lead to Thailand's rise as a medical tourism destination for operations such as cosmetic surgery, LASIK surgery and dental care.

Some hospitals catering to overseas medical tourists more accurately resemble hotels than hospitals. This is especially true of medical tourism hospitals in the South that market their medical operations alongside beach holidays.
