Notting Hill Carnival (August)
From 1964 this has been London’s biggest and most colourful party, and is listed only second to the Rio Carnival in Brazil as the largest street celebration in the world. It was initiated to promote positive race relations.
Lord Mayor’s Show (November)
Every Lord Mayor since 1215, including Dick Whittington, has marked his election with this opulent pageant. The historic show concludes with a big fireworks display over the Thames River.
London Marathon (April)
The Flora London Marathon run is a 26.2 mile (42km) route starting in Greenwich Park and winding its way by such noteworthy London landmarks as Greenwich, Canary Wharf, and Big Ben. At least 30,000 professional and amateur athletes take part in the competition, and the atmosphere is both festive and inspirational for spectators.
Trooping the Colour: Queen's Birthday Parade (June)
A colourful parade full of pomp and pageantry, the Trooping of the Colour takes place amidst the pleasant summer weather of June even though the Queen was born on 21 April. Highlights include the march of the Massed Bands and the parade of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment with their magnificent black chargers.
Chinese New Year (February)
London's Chinatown, located in Soho, goes wild in February to mark the advent of the new year. Expats can expect processions, parades and lots of great food.
