Education and Schools in Chicago

There are almost 700 public schools in the Chicago area and they differ greatly in quality. Some provide a great education in a safe and dynamic environment while some are underfunded, with almost 50 percent drop-out rates, and should most likely be avoided. Public schools are largely attended based on school zones, decided by address. Parents should visit the schools and talk to the school board to explore their options before their children attend.

Many expats in Chicago send their children to private schools which, although expensive, often offer better education than public schools in Chicago. These are sometimes religiously affiliated, particularly Catholic, and sometimes charge less tuition. Financial aid or scholarships are sometimes provided to students who can’t afford tuition, although this certainly should not be expected. Some international schools can continue overseas curricula. Some top rated private schools and international schools are extremely competitive and it is difficult to secure a spot for enrolment, so the earlier the application the better.
