Working in Chicago

Industry in Chicago is unusually diverse as financial, educational, technological, manufacturing, healthcare and food sectors are all strongly represented in the city.

This diversity pulls workers from all over America, as well as the world. Chicago historically was at the centre of trade for American states, while coastal cities like LA or New York were associated with international business. This is certainly not the case any more.

As a central and business-friendly American city, some major companies like Boeing have their headquarters in Chicago, while their industrial and manufacturing departments are based elsewhere. The city has even fostered its own international business ties, particularly with China.

A short list of other recognisable international names includes Kraft, Abbot Laboratories and Motorola.

Intensely competitive universities, like Northwestern and University of Chicago, further pull this city to the forefront of research and technology, and work to create strong links to universities overseas. The University of Illinois at Chicago is America’s largest medical school.

Expats are increasingly needed as Chicago business extends further into other country’s markets and vice versa.
