Cost Living in the USA

The cost of living, like most of the USA, differs greatly by region and, in some cities, is much more expensive than others. New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles are the most expensive places to live. Much of this is due to property prices which can be alleviated by living outside city centres. In rural communities property prices are much lower. The cost of living in a major city can be fifty percent more than national averages. To compensate, wages are increased in cities but often not by the same degree as expenses.

On average, expenses are less than western European countries. However, some differences can be unexpected. There is a need for a reliable vehicle for commutes. Petrol is much cheaper than in Europe but much more is consumed. Heating or air-conditioning are alternately widely used and expensive. On average a mid-priced meal for two will be US$50, a mid-line car US$10,000, a can of coke US$1.00, fast food meal US$5.50.
