Markets in New York City

By Marla Hander of Shop Gotham
In a city as saturated with shopping options as NYC, both indoor and outdoor markets are abundant and are for the most part open all year round; with additional options springing up during the holiday season.
Flower Market in Union Square in NYC
Expats used to doing most of their shopping in daily bazaars or neighbourhood souks may be surprised to find that unlike many cosmopolitan centres, the markets in New York City are often only open on the weekend.

Markets in New York City draw both the local residents and the transient tourists who enjoy the “market culture”. From fresh flowers and food, to vintage apparel and home goods, to the newest fashion creations, you’d be hard pressed not to find a market that piques your interest.

The culture especially appeals to those who enjoy browsing, as there is no guarantee of just what will appear where at any given moment. The “best time to go” can also be just as up in the air as the goods gracing the stall shelves.

Some swear it’s best to go first thing in the morning when a market opens for the best selection; others claim the end of the day is best for getting bargains. Do remember, though bargaining is expected – it is not a normal part of American culture, so do so politely. Finally, cash in hand is always met with a better result.

Expats will find that every neighbourhood has at least one market; each with its own classic character and unique strengths.
