Accommodation in Washington DC

The Washington DC city limits are smaller than most expect and many who move to Washington DC actually live and sometimes work in Virginia and Maryland. These are both better options for suburban family living and for cheaper accommodation near Washington DC. Within the city, many neighbourhoods are full of students attending the many nearby universities, or young professionals recently moved to the city. Residential family homes are found farther out of the city centre.

Property becomes more expensive closer to the city centre. Long commute times are normal and accommodation near public transportation routes, such as the bus or metro lines, is coveted.

The most famous neighbourhood in DC is Capitol Hill, which is popular because of its proximity to the main government work centres. Here, townhouses or apartments are rented out quickly although they go on the market often. Another central area of the city is Dupont Circle, a lively setting with apartment and condo options. Adams Morgan is a diverse and eclectic neighbourhood popular with expats from all over the world. Neighbourhoods in Northeast and Southeast, past 11th
Street, can be dangerous and expats are recommended to avoid renting in these areas.

Within the city a basic furnished one-bedroom apartment will begin rent at US$1200 a month. Houses will start at US$2000. In general, accommodation in Maryland and Virginia will be several hundred dollars cheaper. The average price for buying a home in the DC area is US$584,721.
