Lifestyle and Shopping in Washington DC
As a city filled with politicians and lobbyists, plenty of time and effort is devoted to boasting the bigger expense account. Fat cats and “yes” men alike pour their entertainment budgets into the DC scene and in the very least ensure a lively expat lifestyle.
The nightlife in Washington DC is vibrant, with plenty of variety. Atlas District is one of DC's newest and trendiest areas; other key areas for expat night time entertainment are Adams-Morgan; Dupont Circle along Connecticut Avenue, the Penn Quarter and Georgetown. Another popular area is the Penn Quarter and U Street NW between 9th and 18th streets. Here there are wine bars and lounge bars such as IndeBleu and Zengo or Willard, Sofitel Lafayette Square or the St. Regis. For a more laid-back scene check out Arlington Row for its excellent live music and comedy shows at the Warner Theatre.
Shopping is a key activity for the well-heeled in Washington DC. The nation's oldest neighbourhood, Georgetown, hosts a number of designer boutiques and The Shops at Georgetown Park mall is home to well-known labels like Ann Taylor, Polo and Ralph Lauren.
Drop in to the Georgetown Flea Market if you are looking for antiques, jewellery, books, rugs, toys and linens or head to Penn Quarter for more of the same plus noteworthy art and collectibles.
Another great area to shop is the Dupont Circle neighbourhood which has a LGBT bookshop, Lambda Books, as well as designer boutiques such as Betsy Fisher and vintage shops like Secondi. There is also the FreshFarm Market to enjoy here.
