The Singapore American School was established by expat parents in 1956 to meet the needs of the growing expat community. Today the school is an excellent non-profit American-curriculum school from pre-Kindergarten up to Grade 12. The 36-acre campus is the largest single-campus international school in the world, with almost 4,000 students from 50 countries, although the majority are American. Despite its large student body, the school retains an excellent teacher-to-student ratio of no more than 1:22. The school is renowned for its excellent academic, sporting and cultural achievements, and students consistently out-perform their peers in the US education system. The school has a good choice of extra-curricular activities on offer, although it is particularly known for its established dance programme.

What the school says:

“SAS is located on a 36-acre campus in the Woodlands area of Singapore, approximately 35 minutes’ drive from downtown Singapore. The campus is purpose built, supports classroom spaces for music, art, and drama, and includes state-of -the-art facilities for students at all grade levels. Students enjoy classrooms that are both modern and spacious, with typical classroom sizes of 91m2 in the Primary and Intermediate Schools, and 71m2 in the Middle and High Schools. With open airy walkways, flowing fountains and tropical courtyards located throughout the campus, SAS provides a safe and pleasant learning environment in one of the finest international school facilities in the world.”

Singapore American School is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the US and offers the American High School Diploma at the senior level.

Fees for the 2012/2013 year range from 24,236 SGD ($18,917 or £12,267) a year for pre-kindergarten up to 34,561 SGD ($26,975 or £17,497) a year in Grade 12. The fees are payable before the start of each of the three school terms in unequal instalments. There is a non-refundable registration fee of 12,800 SGD ($9,990 or £6,480).

The school is located in the Woodlands area, about 35 minutes from the city centre.

From the head teacher:

“SAS is a school dedicated to supporting and challenging each student to meet his/her full potential. The school has a rich and extended history of working with students to support their academic, emotional, physical and social development. This is best done by everyone at SAS dedicating themselves to the application of “best practices” in facilitating the learning experiences of students.” ~ Brent Mutsch, Ed.D., Superintendent
