Pros and Cons of Moving to Seoul

Pros

  • High standard of living.
  • Low crime rate.
  • Inexpensive, high-speed Internet.
  • Affordable healthcare.
  • Easy-to-use public transportation.
  • Fun-loving expat community.
  • Many outdoors events and places to visit.
  • Travel opportunities: China, Japan and the Philippines are only a few hours away.
  • Reasonably priced computers and other high-tech gadgets.
  • Welcoming attitude of South Koreans.
  • Great nightlife.
  • A range of international schools to choose from.
  • Lots of cultural festivals, particularly on public holidays.
  • Great markets and shopping opportunities.

Cons

  • The language barrier.
  • Pollution; be it noise, air or light pollution (particularly Yellow Dust).
  • Korean cultural norms and values can be complicated.
  • Occasional discrimination against foreigners.
  • Not that many foreigners with kids in South Korea.
  • South Korean food is difficult to palate.
  • US Military presence, particularly in Itaewon.
  • The depreciation of the South Korean Won.
  • Volatile international relations with North Korea.
