The American International School Guangzhou (AISG) is an independent, not-for-profit day school from pre-kindergarten up to Grade 12. It is both the oldest and largest international school in the city as well as the only non-profit international school. AISG has a good reputation among expat parents for its strong academic programme – it follows a combined IB/American curriculum – and its good facilities, staff and extra-curricular programme. Both the elementary and middle/high school campuses have excellent purpose-built facilities with sport-specific facilities, libraries, music rooms and art rooms, and the Science Park campus is fully wireless enabled. Extra-curricular activities include rugby, badminton, volleyball, drama and numerous outreach programmes, among many others.
What the school says
The Mission Statement for AISG is "Nurturing Students to Aspire and Achieve".
AISG believes that every student has the right to learn in a secure, healthy and positive environment, that every individual has intrinsic worth and should be respected, that learning is a life-long process, that students, parents, teachers and the entire school community share the responsibility for learning, and in the value of open and honest communication.
AISG students are expected to learn with enthusiasm, self-direction and perseverance, communicate and collaborate effectively, think critically and creatively to solve problems, and demonstrate global understanding and citizenship,
AISG is authorised by the International Baccalaureate (IB) to offer the Primary Years Programme and Diploma Programme. The Middle School offers its own courses based on an American curriculum, and these are combined with IB at the high school. Graduates earn an American secondary school diploma and/or IB Diploma.
Fees for the 2018/2019 year range from 122,000 RMB a year for the half-day preschool programme up to 222,50 RMB for Grades 9 to 12. The fees are billed at the beginning of each semester. There are also additional fees for extra-curricular activities, canteen lunches and bus transport. Students from Grade 6 to Grade 12 are expected to have their own Apple Mac laptop.
The school is divided into two campuses. Ersha Campus (preschool to Grade 5) is in Yuexiu District in central Guangzhou, while Science Park Campus (Grades 6 to 12) is to the east of the city centre in Huangpu District.
From the director
"AISG is a warm, supportive environment created by faculty and staff who believe that students should feel cared for and nurtured. Given a choice, who wouldn't want to be in a happy environment where people are cheerful doing what they do? Without doubt, the positive morale throughout the school is one of its greatest assets. Common sense tells us that it is just better to be around others who are content and satisfied, as they create a wonderful sense of comfort and encouragement. Research tells us that in a school, this is critical to maximizing student learning. I find the theory compelling. The positive social interactions between adults and students, and amongst students themselves, positively influence students' brains, promoting better learning and better behaviour. The heart of AISG is what makes it a place of genuine student learning where students can, and do, thrive."
