Healthcare in Canada versus NHS - How do they compare?

If you qualify for provincial health care, it is near all inclusive. It covers virtually any medical procedure that is not elective. Most provinces exclude prescriptions, vision care and dental care, but cover pretty much everything else. There are crackerjack doctors, nurses, and medical facilities in every major city, plus plenty of quick walk-in clinics where you can go for treatment of the run of the mill bumps, scrapes and coughs. Smaller towns still usually have good general practitioners, but may lack hospitals. The down side to Canada's healthcare is that it's good, but it's not fast. A non-critical visit to an ER can be a 12 to 14 hour wait. You can wait up to several months for a non-urgent surgical procedure. It can take several weeks for very expensive diagnostics such as MRI scans. Depending on where you move, you may wait a long time to get a regular family doctor.
