Questions on safety are common amongst expats planning a move to Nigeria.
However, the urban centres of Lagos and Abuja are a little safer than the Northern regions of the country. I don't think the fact that you are Indian will make much difference, all expats need to take precautions when moving to Nigeria.
That being said, there are still safety issues you should be aware of wherever you go in Nigeria. Avoid croweded gatherings or demonstrations on city streets and never carry too much cash or valuable on your person.
Financial crime is also a major issue in Nigeria, so be careful when paying for things with a credit card.
Also, expats should also note that road safety is a pretty big concern in Nigeria. Foreigners are advised to stay off the road at night because of car jackings. Most expats living in Nigeria also choose to hire a driver because road conditions and the behaviour of local road-users can be quite scary if you are new to the country.
